HOW LONG DOES THE HIRING PROCESS TAKE?
The time varies depending on the number of positions available, the complexity of the applicant’s personal history, and the workload of the Background Investigator. In general, it takes approximately eight weeks to complete a background investigation once a candidate is in the background process.
HOW CAN I BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE HIRING PROCESS?
Scheduled Tests and Appointments: Applicants must show up for all scheduled tests and appointments on time. Failure to make all scheduled tests and appointments will result in possible disqualification from the hiring process.
Written Examination: The written examination is comprised of questions that evaluate reading and writing ability. The written examination is a validated written test, which meets California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) requirements. You may obtain written examination preparation information from the P.O.S.T. website.
Oral Interview: An applicant may prepare for the oral interview by researching general information about the City, the Police Department, and the law enforcement field. Criminal justice courses can also provide applicants with useful interview information. Applicants are encouraged to attend an informational meeting provided by the Department and take a ride-along prior to their oral interview.
Background Investigation: The Background Investigator evaluates your suitability for employment based on several factors including your integrity, dependability, judgment, and maturity. Deliberate misstatements or omissions can and often will result in disqualification from the hiring process. The Simi Valley Police Department does not expect perfection; rather, the Department wants the opportunity to lawfully, fairly, and objectively evaluate your qualifications for employment.
Physical Fitness: Applicants must be in good physical condition. All applicants will take a physical agility examination as part of the hiring process. Start a physical fitness program now. You may obtain information on the Academy physical fitness program from the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) website.
