Patrol Unit - K-9 Program

k9 PhotoThe Simi Valley Police Department K-9 Program is designed to utilize police dogs and handlers specially trained in crime scene, missing person, and building searches; suspect apprehensions; narcotics and explosives detection; and crowd control.  It is designed to be a Patrol function, able to assist any Officers when needed.  Not only does this create greater Officer safety, but it means a reduction in the number of man hours used in building and area containment searches; a reduction in crime due to preventive, highly visible patrol; and a reduction in manpower requirements in crowd control situations.

The principal goals and objectives of the Program are:

  • To provide a higher level of police response to better serve the citizens of Simi Valley
  • To develop preventive patrols as a crime deterrent, especially in commercial areas
  • To increase Officer safety in the apprehension of dangerous suspects involved in violent type crimes
  • To promote community awareness and acceptance of the Simi Valley Police Department K-9 Program as a viable and important crime prevention tool
