Helpful Tips to Minimize Coyote Encounters
Wildlife management falls under the purview of the California's Department of Fish and Wildlife and other animal related issues within the City are handled through its contract with Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS). VCAS enforces animal regulations, provides educational materials on preventing wildlife nuisances, removes decreased animals upon request, and responds to emergency wildlife incidents.
As the community continues to coexist with local wildlife, the City of Simi Valley is providing guidelines to help residents safely deter coyotes. Following these best practices can ensure the safety of both residents and wildlife.
1. Do Not Feed Coyotes
Feeding coyotes, intentionally or unintentionally, makes them lose their natural fear of humans. Secure trash bins, and do not leave pet food or water bowls outside. Keep small livestock and poultry in secure pens at night; install electric fencing when possible. Clean bird feeders to remove fallen seed that may attract rodents or other animals. Remove fallen fruit and other food sources that might attract coyotes.
2. Protect Pets
Keep and feed small pets indoors, especially at night. Supervise pets outdoors, and keep them on a leash no longer than six feet.
3. Modify Your Landscape
Trim shrubs and remove dense brush to reduce hiding places. Install motion-sensitive lighting around your property to deter nocturnal wildlife.
4. Maintain Coyotes’ Fear of Humans
Use noise makers, yell, and chase coyotes away from yards and neighborhoods.
5. If You Encounter a Coyote - And it Approaches
- Keep small children and pets close. Do not allow the coyote to get between you and your child or pet.
- Make loud noises—yell, clap, blow a whistle.
- Make yourself look bigger by waving your arms.
- If the coyote does not retreat, throw small objects at the coyote, such as sticks or rocks.
- Let the coyote leave the area on its own.
- If a coyote makes contact, fight back! Then call 9-1-1.
Coyote incidents can be reported by calling (805) 388-4341.
The City of Simi Valley partners with the Ventura County Animal Services for the implementation of the Coyote Management Plan. Residents are encouraged to review the plan to take steps to eliminate attractants on their property in order to minimize conflicts with coyotes and share the information with friends and neighbors.
