Helpful Tips to Minimize Coyote Encounters

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife manages coyotes across the state. For statewide coyote wildlife information, visit the California's Department of Fish and Wildlife website

In the City of Simi Valley, Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) provides animal services. VCAS enforces animal rules, provides tips to preventing wildlife problems, removes dead animals when requested, and responds to wildlife emergencies. Visit the Ventura County Animal Services website to learn more about their wildlife services.

As the community continues to live close to wildlife, the City is sharing easy steps to help residents safely keep coyotes away and protect people, pets, and wildlife.

1. Do Not Feed Coyotes

Feeding coyotes makes them lose their natural fear of people. To avoid attracting them:

  • Keep trash cans closed and secure.
  • Do not leave pet food or water outside.
  • Keep small livestock in secure, covered pens at night. Electric fencing may help.
  • Clean bird feeders so seeds do not fall on the ground.
  • Pick up fallen fruit and remove other outdoor food sources.

2. Protect Pets

  • Keep small pets indoors, especially at night.
  • Watch pets when they are outside.
  • Use a leash no longer than six feet when walking your dog.

3. Make Your Yard Less Appealing to Coyotes

  • Trim shrubs and remove thick brush so coyotes have fewer hiding places.
  • Install motion-activated lights.

4. Help Coyotes Stay Afraid of People

  • If you see a coyote near your home or neighborhood, make loud noises.
  • Shout, clap, or use noise-makers to scare it away.

5. If a Coyote Approaches You

  • Keep children and pets close to you.
  • Do not let the coyote get between you and your child or pet.
  • Make loud noises—yell, clap, or blow a whistle.
  • Raise your arms to look bigger.
  • If the coyote does not leave, throw small objects, such as sticks or rocks, near it, not at it.
  • Give the coyote space to leave.
  • If a coyote makes physical contact, fight back and call 9-1-1.

To report a coyote incident, call (805) 388-4341.

The City of Simi Valley works with the Ventura County Animal Services (VCAS) to follow the Coyote Management Plan. Residents are encouraged to review the plan, reduce attractants on their property, and share this information with neighbors.
