The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center will be celebrating 25 years of performing arts programming in the year 2020.  In recognition of this important milestone, we are developing a special commemorative season and we would like to include productions from some of the many talented arts organizations in the community.   

The Cultural Arts Center is now accepting applications from experienced theater companies and performing arts organizations who wish to rent our Mainstage to produce high quality theatrical productions during this momentous year.   Production runs can range from one to five weekends and can be either a musical or a play  (Applicants who wish to reserve a DownStage production, dance performance, concerts, special event, and one-night only performance can instead submit a standard rental inquiry form).

In its 25 years, the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center has built a strong reputation for excellence in the performing arts.  This is an exciting opportunity for our local arts organizations to join us in celebrating this accomplishment and usher us into a new era of the arts in Simi Valley.

Background

The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center (CAC) first opened its doors in 1995 and has since become a regional hub for the performing arts.  The CAC is housed within a historical building and features a 185-seat professional mainstage, the 80-seat DownStage black box theater, both with full technical capabilities, professional dressing rooms, exhibit space, and a catering kitchen.

Functioning as a production, presentation and rental house, the CAC is home to over 350 events a year. Events include musicals, recitals, dance performances, art exhibits, weddings, community meetings, concerts, and more.

The Cultural Arts Center facility is owned by the City of Simi Valley and operated by the Department of Community Services.

Application Criteria

All Applications are due by May 31, 2019 at 5:30 p.m (extended from the original May 10, 2019 deadline).

Applications will be reviewed by an evaluation committee determined by the Community Services Director or his/her designee.

Scheduling priority will be determined based on point total per performance.  In the event of a tie, priority will be based on the order in which the applications are received.

Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Length of Production: 25 points (5 points per consecutive weekend; including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday performances)
  • Imagination, creativity, and guiding philosophy behind the selection of the production and a demonstrated capacity to bring this to life: 25 points
  • Connection to the Cultural Arts Center and City of Simi Valley: 20 points
  • Previous Production History: 15 points (5 points per positive venue reference)
  • Promotion of Cultural Awareness and Inclusivity: 10 points
  • 501(c)3 Non-Profit, Educational, or Simi Valley Based Organization: 5 points

100 points total

 

Anticipated Time Line

Applications Open: April 10, 2019

Application Closing: May 31, 2019

Application Review: Week of June 3, 2019

Notify and Contact Finalists: Week of June 10, 2019

 

General Terms:

Applicants can submit up to three Mainstage productions through this process.

If an applicant wishes to apply for more than three productions, the first three should be completed through this application.  Any additional productions may be  submitted through a standard rental inquiry form and will only be considered after all eligible applicants have reserved their respective dates through this process. 

Applicant will agree to an initial consultation with CAC staff to review production details prior to confirmation. This consultation will verify production capacity, artistic ability, and technical capabilities of the applicant.

In the event that licensing for a production submitted on an application is not available or selected by another production company, CAC staff may work with applicants to determine another suitable production.

Rentals are not considered to be confirmed until the contract is signed by both parties and the appropriate deposit is received by the City of Simi Valley.

All applicants will agree to pay the CAC’s rental rates and fees.  These rates and fees are set by City Council and subject to change without notice.

The City of Simi Valley retains strict control over the application process and may amend this policy as it sees fit.  Further, the City may deny any application for any reason.
