VCTC to Host Traffic Calming Pop-Up on May 27, 2026

Post Date:05/11/2026 3:30 p.m.
The Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC), in partnership with the City of Simi Valley, will host a traffic calming pop-up demonstration on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the intersection of Sycamore Drive and Cochran Street in Simi Valley. During the event, community members will have an opportunity to experience temporary curb and median extensions designed to shorten pedestrian crossing distances and encourage slower vehicle speeds.

The temporary demonstration is part of VCTC’s Countywide Community Traffic Calming Project, which focuses on identifying roadway areas with excessive vehicle speeds and other traffic safety concerns and evaluating potential solutions to improve safety, calm traffic, and reduce vehicle miles traveled.

As part of the project, VCTC and local agency partners are using temporary “pop-up” demonstrations to test roadway safety improvements for people walking, rolling, and biking before permanent changes are considered. These demonstrations use temporary materials, such as cones, tape, and signage, to simulate potential street design enhancements in a real-world setting.

The demonstration locations were selected based on roadway safety concerns, including collision history, unsafe driving speeds, and bicycle and pedestrian activity levels. The Sycamore Drive and Cochran Street intersection is one of three locations throughout Ventura County selected for temporary demonstrations, alongside sites in Ventura and Oxnard.

“Pop-up demonstrations provide communities with a hands-on opportunity to experience potential roadway safety improvements before permanent changes are considered,” said Anthony Gallo, Senior Engineer with the City of Simi Valley. “Community feedback is an important part of the process and will help inform future safety enhancements.”

Residents, commuters, and local stakeholders are encouraged to visit the site to learn more about traffic calming strategies, experience the temporary improvements firsthand, and complete a brief survey to provide feedback on existing traffic conditions and how the proposed enhancements could improve safety and comfort for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.
