Unprecedented statewide drought conditions have severely reduced water supplies to southern California, and the City has only half the water needed to meet our normal water demand through the summer months. The City’s suppliers, the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) and Calleguas Municipal Water District, have mandated restricting irrigation to one day per week. We are striving to avoid a “No Outdoor Water Use” mandate later in 2022. The vast majority of citywide water use occurs outdoors.
The City declared a Stage IV Water Supply Shortage calling for mandatory water conservation actions including:
- One day per week watering schedule, based on address, and no watering between 9 a.m. & 5 p.m.
- Addresses ending in an odd number can water on Saturdays only
- Addresses ending in an even number can water on Sundays only

City of Simi Valley/Waterworks District No. 8 customers are also required to follow these water use mandates:
- Water no more than 10 minutes per zone, per allowed watering day, and use multiple, shorter cycles to eliminate or minimize excess water runoff (this also applies for drip and other high-efficiency, low application rate irrigation devices)
- No watering during (and for 48 hours after) measurable rainfall
- Cease washing exterior hard surfaces such as sidewalks and driveways
- No initial filling of decorative water features
- Residential swimming pools must be covered when not in use
- No filling or refilling ornamental lakes or ponds except to sustain aquatic life
- Fix all leaks, breaks, or malfunctions within 48 hours
The State Water Board has also prohibited all watering of non-functional turf for all commercial, institutional, industrial, HOA, and mutli-family properties until further notice. "Non-Functional" means the turf is solely ornamental, and is not regularly used for recreation, sports, or for civic or community events.
Golden State Water customers are also under the same one day a week watering schedule, but some other requirements may vary. Please visit gswater.com for more information.
The City has assembled a Water Shortage Emergency Fact Sheet as a reference guide for the community as of June 1, 2022. Due to the severe nature of the drought, the restrictions are subject to change.
The City is calling on everyone to limit water use to essential purposes. Outdoor watering is limited to one day a week, preferably using low flow/low volume irrigation systems, and is intended to keep shrubs, trees, and our urban forest alive. The water savings from reducing irrigation should have a significant impact in reducing overall water demand. Our goal is to conserve enough water as a community to avoid a complete ban on outdoor watering and to keep public area turf alive for active recreational uses.
