The solids removed from the primary clarifiers and a portion of the solids from the activated sludge process are further reduced in anaerobic digesters. These large cylindrical tanks are heated and mixed to create methane and carbon dioxide gas. The methane gas is flared in our waste gas burner. This process reduces the volatile solids and further stabilizes the sludge.
