The City Attorney is appointed by the City Council to act as the City’s general legal counsel. As general legal counsel, the City Attorney advises the City Council, District and Agency Boards and all City Departments. The City Attorney's Office renders professional legal advice to the Ventura County Waterworks District No. 8, the Successor Agency to the Simi Valley Community Development Agency, the Simi Valley Industrial Development Authority, and the Simi Valley Public Financing Authority. In addition, the City Attorney’s office represents the City in regulatory and court proceedings.
Within these responsibilities, the City Attorney's Office receives and investigates claims filed against the City, investigates and prosecutes criminal charges for citations issued by the Police Department and Request for Formal Complaints presented by Code Enforcement for violations of the Simi Valley Municipal Code. The City Attorney’s Office also participates in City Council, Planning Commission, Affordable Housing, Development Advisory Committee, Mobile Home Rent Review, Sustainable Simi Valley Committee , and Community Development Block Grant Committee (CDBGC) meetings, handles litigation in-house, coordinates litigation handled by outside counsel, and works with staff of all Departments of the City on day to day matters involving the operations of the City.
In addition to the City Attorney, the City Attorney’s Office is staffed by two Assistant City Attorneys, each providing an expertise in varying aspects of the law.
The City Attorney’s office does not prosecute violations of the California Penal or Vehicle Code, or other violations of State law.
